It is a team sport of Native American origin played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled stick called a crosse or lacrosse stick, mainly played on the East Coast of the United States and Canada.

History

Lacrosse is a relatively popular team sport in the America. It is estimated to have been developed in the early 5th century and has undergone modifications since then. It has played significant role in the community and religious life of tribes across the continent for many years. Early lacrosse was characterized by deep spiritual involvement, befitting the spirit of combat in which it was undertaken. Those who took part did so in the role of warriors, with the goal of bringing glory and honor to themselves and their tribes. Types of play

There are 3 different types of play. One is called Field Lacrosse or also known as the "fastest sport on two feet,", it is a full contact outdoor men's sport played with ten players on each team. It is one of three major versions of lacrosse played internationally.

The other two versions are women's lacrosse and box lacrosse and these are played under significantly different rules.

Women's lacrosse was established in the 1890s. It is a sport played with twelve players on each team. The object of the game is to use a long handled racket, known as a lacrosse stick or a crosse, to catch, carry, and pass a solid rubber ball in an effort to score by ultimately hurling the ball into an opponent's goal.

Box Lacrosse originated in the 1930s. is an indoor version of lacrosse played mostly in North America. It is played between two teams of six players each, and is traditionally played on an ice hockey rink once the ice has been removed or covered. The playing area is called a box, in contrast to the open playing field of field lacrosse.
